History

Legacy of peace and spiritual awakening

Girnar Sadhana Ashram, also known as Punit Ashram, has its roots in the deep spiritual journey of Poojya Maharishi Shri Punitachariji. What began as a silent inner calling slowly grew into a sacred place that supports peace, meditation, and selfless service. The ashram stands today as a space where seekers can connect with the divine in a simple and natural way.

The foundation of the ashram was laid in 1973 at the foothills of the holy Girnar Mountain in Junagadh, Gujarat. Punitachariji chose this location for its natural purity, quiet surroundings, and powerful spiritual vibration. His dream was to create a non-sectarian place where anyone regardless of background, Guru, or religion could come for inner growth. With this purpose, the ashram began offering simple stay facilities, daily meditation, and a peaceful environment to help seekers turn inward. Over time, it became a trusted destination for people wanting to experience calmness and clarity in their spiritual path.

A major turning point in the ashram’s history came in 1975. After years of continuous and intense sadhana, Punitachariji received a direct divine vision of Sadguru Dattatreya. Filled with compassion, he prayed for a path that could bring peace and happiness to everyone, especially those suffering or lost. In answer to this heartfelt wish, the universal Maha Mantra “Hari Om Tatsat Jay Guru Datt” was revealed. This mantra is known to guide seekers into effortless meditation (Sahaj Yoga), helping the mind settle naturally without strain. From that moment, it became the heart of the ashram’s spiritual practice.

As the mantra and teachings spread, the ashram grew into a sanctuary of peace and collective welfare. It provides free lodging, meals, and daily meditation so that every visitor can focus fully on their inner journey. Constant chanting of the Maha Mantra fills the space with a gentle, uplifting energy that supports deep healing and self-realisation. Today, Girnar Sadhana Ashram stands as a living symbol of the Dattatreya tradition’s grace, continuing to guide thousands of seekers toward peace, purpose, and spiritual awakening.
